Industrial Design students from the Rhode Island School of Design were recently tasked with creating a child’s chair from cardboard in one week. For the project, teams of three had to brainstorm, prototype and finish a chair cut from a piece of 48″x80″ cardboard that was able to support at least 55lbs.

The students used different construction methods and came up with some playful and interactive designs, like a laser cut rocking chair and a single sheet folded animal chair. They also “experimented with techniques of structural integrity to account for the physical nature of children’s play and the wear and tear of repeated use.” The chairs were then tested by seven children, who played and interacted with them while the students watched via a webcam and received some valuable insights.
